Bowhunting
Bowhunting is certainly for the more adventurous hunter. Using a bow to
hunt means that you need to get much closer to your prey and therefore
far more stealth is involved. For example if you were to hunt using a
rifle you would usually shoot from ranges in excess of 200 yards (180m)
compared to bowhunting which restricts the distance to roughly 45
yards, but more commonly 20-25 yards. Bowhunting is a unique experience
as you have to be aware of the animals senses, how good their sight,
smell is etc to know how far away to stand, how quiet to be and whether
you need to be in full camouflage clothing or not. It has to be said
that there is a far greater intimacy between hunter and animal which
cannot be felt when using a rifle.
Nowadays Compound Bows are the preferred choice of Bow to use for
Bowhunting expeditions due to them being compact and maneuverable.
Silencing the Bow
Bowhunting it has to be said is far more frustrating than using a rifle, and I am sure that on many occasions hunters have looked their prey in the eye and wished that they were holding a rifle instead of a bow and the reason for this is that it makes less noise to hold up a rifle than it does to draw a bow. This is a problem that hunters have had since the bow and arrow was invented, and people have learned many tricks over the years to hide themselves and cover the noise of the bow. One advantage of living in the modern world is that technology is now lending us a helping hand and most of today’s bows come complete with silencing accessories. These come in different forms, string silencers can cut down on string oscillation and the noise which is generated from that. Dampeners’ in the riser or on the limbs will help to reduce the vibration. Many bows will already come with these devices incorporated into the bow but if it does not then you can add them yourself without too much fuss, however most string silencers will require some sort of press to relax your bowstring, but a pro shop will be able to that for you if you don’t own one yourself. Also fitting a stabilizer is a good idea as this will reduce the amount of vibration and hand shock which in turn will improve accuracy, which let’s face it, is something we all need a hand with! Another tip is to practice with these devices already fitted to your bow as this will allow you to get used to how it all works, string silencers alone can affect your groups so you will benefit greatly from the practice before the hunt season begins.
Adhesive Fleece
There is nothing more frustrating than having stalked down a large animal and getting positioned and ready just to hear the hissing of the arrow when it’s drawn across a metal rest or clinking of a shaft on the riser of the bow, then watching your prize stare directly at you, your position given away. Camouflage adhesive fleece is great, use it to cover the whole shelf and over the lip toward the grip; then place it on the inside surface of the riser to the highest point an arrow shaft would reach if a bump occurred at an inappropriate time. If you also add some adhesive fleece on the underside of the upper limb and right up to the cable you can then hang your bow anywhere without making any noise. If you practice going on a hunt and all the places you may rest your bow and then cover those places where the bow will make contact with its resting place and cover it in fleece.
